Different Types of Alcohol Rehab

Awareness that you need alcohol rehab is the first step toward a new way of life. The next step is to begin researching the best alcohol rehab facility for you or your loved one. There's a variety of factors to consider when choosing an alcohol rehab, including the different programs offered and financial cost involved. Some facilities are more clinical and are conducted in an environment similar to a hospital setting, while others are more casual with residential facilities. Most alcohol rehabs base their alcohol treatment on the 12-step model, but there are alternatives available for those who are uncomfortable with the 12-step program. SouthCoast Recovery offers a variety of specialized treatment options for drug and alcohol rehab, including 30, 60, 90-day and 6 month residential treatment.

Alcohol Rehab Programs

There are thousands of drug and alcohol rehab centers in the United States and the vast majority of these centers are based on the 12-step model, the most widely recognized model of success in recovery. Alternatives to the 12-step program include Christian or other faith-based programs, holistic therapy as an overall mind/body/spirit renewal and clinical based programs that focus on cognitive behavioral therapy and dual diagnosis (mood disorders) as effective in treating alcoholism or drug addiction.

SouthCoast Recovery offers a traditional 12-step recovery model with alternative faith-based programs, including Christian and American Indian as well as clinical therapy for the treatment of dual diagnosis and holistic therapies for overall mind, body and spirit well-being. We treat every person who comes through our doors as an individual and tailor a program that fits his or her needs

Different Levels of Treatment at Alcohol Rehab

In addition to the variety of different programs available, there are also different approaches to each program depending upon the level of care an individual needs in alcohol rehab. The lowest level of care available for people who abuse alcohol or other substances on a moderate level is an Outpatient program. Outpatient consists of group processing and individual counseling conducted at a residential care facility or clinical setting generally after work or clinic hours. Individuals reside at home and maintain a regular work or school schedule while attending outpatient sessions and checking in with an assigned counselor for a specified number of hours a week. Random drug and alcohol testing and 12-step meetings may also be included in an Outpatient program.

DetoxDetox is generally required for individuals who have been using drugs and alcohol consistently and heavily for a long period of time, resulting in the need for supervised medical detox in order to stabilize the body as it withdrawals from the chemicals it has become accustomed to. Medical detox is generally followed by residential treatment.

Residential treatment usually involves 24-hour supervision at a residential facility or clinical care unit anywhere from 21 to 30 days, dependent upon the facility. This length of time can be extended given the level of care needed.

Generally individuals entering residential treatment have a history of consistent and heavy drug or alcohol use and/or abuse. Residential treatment facilities generally offer therapy, drug and alcohol counseling, education on the disease model of addiction and group processing within a safe and structured environment. Individuals are generally introduced to the 12-step model of recovery through AA meetings either held at the center or in the community, and learn how to build a support network as well as identify and prevent triggers that may lead them back to drinking once they leave the facility. SouthCoast Recovery also offers the additional benefit of innovative workshops on the latest discoveries linking mind, body and spirit to help overcome alcoholism and drug addiction.

Following residential treatment, some facilities offer AfterCare, which generally consists of counseling sessions and group processing on a weekly basis, typically lasting 6-12 months following treatment.

Alcohol Rehab & Sober Living

Some individuals may require more structure than AfterCare following residential treatment. There are facilities that offer Sober Living for individuals who are not yet comfortable returning to an existing home environment or living on their own and maintaining sobriety. Sober Living consists of like-minded individuals who are also working on strengthening their sobriety prior to returning to the community. Residents are generally required to pay rent, work, continue their education or volunteer. Nightly curfew, random drug testing and attendance at 12-step meetings is mandatory.

SouthCoast Recovery offers a transitional level for smoother acclimation back into society that few treatment programs can match. This is not merely sober living. Our experiential program allows clients to progress from initial sobriety to productive members of society with the continued supportive environment of SouthCoast Recovery and the skills of an assigned drug and alcohol counselor. Green-level process and discussion groups meet twice a week to discuss current obstacles or frustrations. In addition, clients meet with an assigned counselor twice a week for one-on-one counseling and house dinners.

At SouthCoast Recovery, we consider our transitional living clients an inherent part of our extended family. It is extremely rewarding to watch the transformation process as our clients gain employment, repair and restore family relationships, and become successful members of the community.

Choosing the Right Alcohol Rehab for You

It's hard enough to admit you have a problem with alcohol and need alcohol rehab. It's even more difficult to figure out where to go to get help. Generally by the time you realize your life is unmanageable, it's all you can do to continue to get through the day, let alone make a life-changing decision.

Not all alcohol rehab facilities are going to have what you're looking for. Most will have intake coordinators who can talk you through the process and answer the questions that you have about the program basis, length of time needed and additional treatment methods offered.

If you can, tour the facility and get a copy of the treatment schedule you would adhere to during your stay. Find out if the facility offers a comprehensive treatment program that addresses mind, body and spirit therapies. Ensure that the staff members are qualified, including counselors, holistic practitioners and even administrative staff. If you can't visit the facility, ask as many questions as you can of the intake coordinators and compare your research with other facilities that fit what you're looking for. When it comes time to make a decision, go with what feels right to you.
