After marijuana and amphetamines, cocaine is considered to be the most widely available drug on high school and college campuses in the United States. Over 600,000 Americans are currently cocaine addicted. Given the smaller number of individuals who smoke the “rock” form of the drug, this makes it one of the most addictive forms of cocaine use in the country. Cocaine use by college students reached a ten-year high in 2006 when over 5% reported having used the drug during their time in school. The low during that period was 2.1% in 1996.

Up to 75% of people who try cocaine will become addicted to it. Only one out of four people who try to quit will be able to do so without help. Cocaine is the second most commonly used illicit drug in the U.S. More than 34 million Americans (14.7%) age 12 or older have used cocaine at least once in their lifetime. Over 15,000 deaths annually associated with stimulants in the US.

Each day 5,000 more people will experiment with cocaine. Cocaine addiction was responsible for 14 % of the 1.6 million admissions in 1999 to publicly funded drug addiction facilities. In 1988, about 300,000 infants were born addicted to cocaine.

There are several things to keep in mind when selecting a treatment program, or center. Foremost is the fact that everybody has an individual need and treatment programs must be tailored to meet that need. One size fits all does not apply.

Recovery needs to take place in the right setting, with the right services and drug rehab treatments to best effect a positive outcome.

Even if a person does not voluntarily check-in to a treatment program, it does not mean the treatment will be ineffective. Many people present themselves for treatment by court order, not of their own free will, and can receive the same benefit as those who are there voluntarily.

When a person is ready for treatment it is important for that treatment to be ready for him/her. Services must be available, because if a person has to endure being put on a waiting list, or has to drive long distances to receive treatment, the odds are against them from the get go.

It’s easy for people to fall between the cracks if help is not readily available.

In many cases, people entering treatment need to go through medical detoxification. While it is an important first step in the treatment program, detox is not the whole answer to the problem. People need to get the drugs out of their system, but that does not address the long-term problems of addiction.

Programs need to meet the needs of people, beyond the physical and emotional addiction problem itself. We are body, mind and spirit. Intervention that does not include all of a person’s needs falls short of the minimum goal of the program.

Addiction is as much about the spirit as it is about the mind and body. Many addicts going into recovery has legal problems to sort out, job problems, social integration problems. Every aspect of the person’s life needs to be addressed.

Needs change and treatment programs need to change as those needs change. Progress or the lack of progress needs to be assessed on an ongoing basis. What was necessary in the first phases of treatment may need to be changed as time goes on. Perhaps a patient is on medication initially, but will later require counseling or psychotherapy. There may be family matters to work through, or vocational training.

Religion is as old as the world and millions of people live their lives based on religious beliefs, so when addiction strikes, it makes sense for the pious of our society to seek recovery in their religious beliefs. These days, addiction comes in so many forms and from so many different sources that it cannot be said that an individual suffering from addiction has a character flaw or is just a bad person. Addiction happens to the best of us, many times as a result of medication after surgery or to stabalize a mental health condition. For those who are very pious and believe very strongly in their religion, drug rehab needs to have the elements of their belief system in order for them to connect it with thier HIgher Power.
Although Christian based drug rehabs are probably the most commonly known in the addiction recovery field, there are drug rehabs focused entirely on Buddhism, Catholisism, Islam, Judaism, and also catering to agnostism and atheism. Depending on personal belief, these kinds of drug rehab centers have been deisgned to make recovery easily identifiable for each individual.
When considering strong religious convictions, anything contrary to the core belief systems of an individual in recovery can cause an immediate and complete dismissal of the drug rehab program. For example, if an atheist goes to drug rehab at a center that focuses on the 12-step philosophy, even the Higher Power can turn that individual off from the program based on an individual belief that no HIgher Power exists, making the rehab process much more difficut to grasp when everything being taught is based on something that is not part of that individual’s belief system. Generally relgious drug rehab would be something for those who are very devout and hold very strong convictions, but religious based drug rehab has also been very effective in helping some people to find religion for the first time, or rediscover it for themselves. When recovery happens, it can feel like a miracle made possible by the philosophy used in the recovery process. And if that philosophy is one based on religious beliefs, addicts and alcoholics who find success in their experience with drug rehab, often discover a new found faith in the belief system of the drug rehab and their personal approach and interpretation.
Relligious drug rehab is something that is certainly powerful enough to save a life through spirituality and turn everything around, but it is important to understand that religion is not something that can be forced on any individual and it is not a good idea to force any person to attend a religious drug rehab, especially if they are opposed to it. This will only make thier defiance stronger, making it near impossible for them to even grasp the recovery aspect of drug rehab beacuse of their refusal to accept the religious teachings. Drug rehab is not about religion, it is about recovery and religion is one of many means to that end, but it takes someone who is open to recieve the additional message of religion to accomany the important messages of recovery.

At present drug addiction is one of the most serious problems affecting society. As a result, many different types of drug and alcoholic rehab centers have been established in various parts of the world. When a drug addict is at such a severe stage, he or she is left with no other option but to continue taking drugs indefinitely, it’s time to seek professional care at a drug rehabilitation centre.

The California drug rehab centre is one of the most famous rehab centers in the country. This rehab centre helps a large number of drug addicts every day. There are programs aimed at curbing addiction to street drugs and alcohol as well as prescription drugs such as vicodin.

An effective drug rehab program provides a person with the opportunity to overcome their addiction and become a productive member of society once again. One big question drug addicts and their loved ones must tackle is how to choose the best rehab center. The best way to find an answer is to seek counseling with a drug addiction treatment professional who can guide the individual in making their choice of rehab centers. An addict who is comfortable with their rehab experience is far more likely to succeed at overcoming addiction than one who feels alienated or disturbed about their treatment.

These methods may prove useful when traditional rehabilitation methods fail.

1. Why Do People Get Addictions?

The reasons for addiction are complicated and vary with each and every individual. These same reasons may be difficult for us to understand, and even a lot more difficult to resolve. Drug and alcohol rehab in recent years has taken a hard and diverse approach to the problem of addiction. Taking in consideration are the physical, emotional, and even nutritional factors that may be causes. Whether you’re seeking help for yourself or whether you are a concerned friend or family member of someone who is in a very dangerous grip of addiction, be confident that you are not the only one. Addictions come in varied forms, some are dangerous and some are not.

2. The Physiological Approach

It doesn’t mean that just because you are encountering a dangerous addiction its alright to think that you are different from everyone else. It only means that you’ll need to seek out specially qualified help. Many physiological and chemical imbalances that occur in our bodies and brains may contribute or cause our feelings of depression, that can lead us into addiction as we try to self medicate to compensate for our emotional distress. We are living in an era where many problems like chemical depression and blood sugar imbalances are easily diagnosed and treated. Often, addicts who treat these underlying problems will experience great relief from the urge to feel better by drinking.

3. Blood Chemistry

The best and most popular idea we have of drug rehab is the old 12-step group therapy that we so often see on television shows and movies. The fact is, science has a lot more to tell us about how our bodies and brains respond to all kinds of substances. A lot of evidence suggests that when a physiological or chemical imbalance is occurs in the brain no matter what the cause, that individual will try to compensate for the imbalance he is experiencing by self-medicating with drugs. Modern drug rehab programs often use this approach to look for chemical brain imbalances to help their patients recover. In addition to this, imbalances in blood chemistry can also lead to drug and alcohol addiction. Having problems such as low blood sugar can lead someone to self medicate so that he can cure any fatigue or anxiety that he may be feeling. A balanced nutritional intake and exercise have shown themselves to be aids in the process of drug rehab.

4. Social Theory

Usually people who are deeply addicted often have neglected themselves, so by finding a diet and exercise program, it can really lift their self image. Another advantage of exercise to anyone who is an addict is that it also provides a natural high that can help an addict to get through the rough periods in his rehabilitation. Some individuals may be comfortable with the idea of group counseling while some may have difficulty in comprehending it. An option for these kinds of people is one on one therapy, where a therapist can reach out to the deepest and most personal aspects of an addicts life. Looking for answers for addiction and possible recovery is an extremely difficult task to anyone. It takes a lot of devotion and time to even see the smallest of developments. Being able to find the right place to do the work toward recovery is an important step. The wants needs of each and every addict are different from each other, and the process of finding a place to fully recover can be a very deep, difficult, personal and intense process.

According to statistics on marijuana use it is estimated that about 40% of the U.S. population has at least tried marijuana at some point in their lives, which would equate to over 97 million people. Because marijuana has been around for some time, so many people have tried it, and it does not have the same reputation as other harder drugs such as cocaine or heroin for being a drug of choice for drug addicts it often more accepted and overlooked as an addictive drug.

If you suspect someone you know or care about is using marijuana or is addicted to marijuana but are not sure, some of the things you can look for is blood shot eyes, drug paraphernalia, lack of interest in outdoor or other activities, and significant changes in weight loss/gain.

Although not many people choose to enter drug rehab centers specifically for addiction many drug addicts will use marijuana as a gateway drug for another drug and when getting treatment for another drug will be treated for withdrawal from marijuana as well. It is important to know that there are withdrawal symptoms to stopping the use of marijuana such as, restlessness, irritability, inability to sleep, anxiety, and headaches. Depression can also play a role in withdrawal symptoms and will need to be treated as well.

Alcohol detox is a process by which the addictive substances in the body of an alcoholic are purged for a certain period of time. This period is extremely difficult for some patients since they are made to do a “cold turkey” and go without the alcoholic drink that they have been used to for a long period of time. As a result of this, alcoholic patients experience withdrawal symptoms, which can cause complications and can even become fatal, which is why alcohol detox should only be done under medical supervision. These symptoms add to the difficulty of alcohol detox since some of them can be debilitating. However, patients can expect to take medication and undergo certain medical procedures, by which they can overcome these symptoms.

Common withdrawal symptoms

The signs and symptoms of withdrawal appear between six to 48 hours after the patient “stops” drinking alcohol. Some of the most common symptoms include tremors, mild headaches, cold sweat, vomiting, loss of appetite, insomnia, restlessness, rapid pulse, anxiety and auditory hallucinations. On the other hand, some of the most severe withdrawal symptoms include Delirium Tremors, grand mal seizures and autonomic hyperactivity. The severity of the physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms depends on the patient’s history of alcohol abuse.

Treatment of symptoms

To treat these symptoms, patients are given medication such as anti-convulsants and benzodiazepines, which can help relive some physical symptoms. In some cases, certain medical procedures are also administered to the patient to relieve the symptoms.

Alcohol detox is a painful process because patients who undergo detox exhibit a wide range of withdrawal symptoms, which can lead to more complications. What’s more, some of these symptoms can even be fatal. Given this, detox should only be done under medical supervision, which also ensures that the patient will be given medications. Proper medical attention can help relieve the symptoms and make the whole detox process a little bit more bearable.

Alcohol Detox provides detailed information on Alcohol Detox, Alcohol Detox Symptoms, Alcohol Detox Centers, Alcohol Detox Protocols and more. Alcohol Detox is affiliated with Alcohol Rehab Program.

This post on the effects of heroin is meant to educate and help those who may have a loved one who is experimenting or addicted to heroin. Quite often people who haven’t used drugs or who have not had any exposure or education find it difficult to understand how someone would consider even trying such a thing. Hopefully by learning how heroin works you may get a better picture of how you can help your loved one.
When a heroin user injects or inhales heroin, the drug effects the brain very quickly. The brain converts heroin to morphine which allows the opioid to connect to the brain’s pleasure receptors. Once this happens the heroin user feels a sudden surge of pleasure, often referred to as a “rush”. The “rush” is usually accompanied with a warm sensation of the skin, dry mouth, a feeling of heaviness, nausea, vomiting, and severe itching.
Heroin effects the brains natural ability to control the cells which allow you to feel pleasure. Over time, as the brain is continually on pleasure overload from the heroin the body’s natural pain-pleasure system will cease to function without the use of heroin.

Heroin affects almost every part of the body, signs of heroin use:

* The heart – (lowering blood pressure and pulse rate)
* The lungs – (breathing can be slowed even to the point of death)
* The eyes – (become droopy, pupils very small and do not react to light)
* Vocal chords – (voice becomes raspy, slow, and slurred)
* Muscles – (coordination is slowed, and head nods forward)
* Skin – (dries out and itches)
* Cough – (suppressing the cough center in the brain)
* Reproductive system (damaged)
* The hormonal system (woman’s period delayed and men produce less testosterone)
* Sex drive (decreases sexual desire even to a point of indifference)
* Digestive (nausea, addicts determine a good batch of heroin if it makes them vomit)
* Immune system (breaks down)
* Intestines (causes severe constipation with chronic use)
* Pain receptors (insensitivity to warning pain signals, which keep a user from treating pain)

Most heroin abusers will feel drowsy and have clouded mental function for several hours after use. It is common for heroin users to experience a clinical overdose. Most are not intentional, but happen because when purchasing on the street they are not able to know the purity of the drug. Some signs of an overdose include:

* Weak heart beat
* Breathing is labored and lungs fill with fluid
* Drop in blood pressure
* Pale or a blue skin
* Pinpoint pupils
* Fresh needle marks
* Gasping or rattling when breathing
* Slow heartbeat
* Convulsions

An overdose happens quickly and can lead to a coma, and even death if not revived quickly. Heroin statistics show, an estimated 3 to 4 thousand people die from heroin overdoses each year. There are many drug rehab centers that specialize in heroin addiction. If you or a loved one is suffering from heroin addiction get help now.
