There are so many drug rehab facilities to choose from you may have a difficult time finding the right one for you. Drug rehab facilities may offer inpatient, outpatient, medical care, clinical care, holistic facilities or 12-step support groups. The disease of addiction is complicated and addressing it requires a comprehensive approach. How do you know which drug rehab facilities offer what you’re looking for?

SouthCoast Recovery in Dana Point, California, offers a comprehensive alcohol treatment and drug addiction program that combines medical, clinical and holistic care into a personal program for you. Addiction is different for everyone. Your own personal history of alcohol and drug abuse, family dynamics, genetics, potential for chemical imbalance, physical pain, emotional issues, relationship troubles, religious beliefs – all of these make up the individual you are and all can play a part in contributing to your alcohol and drug abuse. When you remove the alcohol or the drugs, the reasons for drinking or taking drugs still remain. These are the issues that need to be addressed in order to maintain long-term sobriety.

Many drug rehab facilities are not equipped to address this level of drug and alcohol treatment. SouthCoast Recovery has professional staff members that are highly trained and qualified to address who you are as an individual on every level. We have medical personnel, clinical therapists, drug and alcohol counselors, and holistic practitioners trained in acupuncture and detoxification massage. All of our professionals work together to design an individual plan for you.

If you are researching drug rehab facilities, why settle for less than a personalized drug and alcohol treatment plan that addresses all your physical, mental and emotional well-being? SouthCoast Recovery offers all the amenities of other exclusive drug rehab facilities at a fraction of the cost. We are located just south of renowned Laguna Beach in the harbor town of Dana Point, California. Our eight residential homes are filled with all the comforts you would expect in your own home – high-speed Internet access, cable TV, a fully stocked kitchen and the camaraderie of others who are going through the same experience.

Drug Rehab Los Angeles

When considering drug rehab in Los Angeles, why not consider a tranquil setting along the beach away from all the chaos and congestion? SouthCoast Recovery in Dana Point, California, is situated in a calm, harbor town that offers just the rest and relaxation you need following what is likely to be a long, hard struggle with drugs and alcohol.

Drug rehab in Los Angeles is like attempting to shoot a movie on I-405 at rush hour. You are trying to shut down in the middle of six-lanes of chaos with everything coming at you at once. In order to make the transition necessary to get sober, you need a calm and stress-free environment so you can get in touch with the voice within. While this may sound like “New Ageism” it is in fact a necessary part of getting sober and staying sober. In fact, it’s likely you haven’t heard that voice within for a very, very long time and that’s how drugs and alcohol became so attractive in the first place.

SouthCoast Recovery in Dana Point, California, offers just such an opportunity. We offer eight residential homes within footsteps of some of the best beaches in southern California. Just south of Laguna Beach, the art and surf culture that surrounds Dana Point makes for an ideal place to escape from the world. We have 30, 60, 90 day and 6 month drug and alcohol treatment programs to choose from as well as gender-specific housing.

Orange County attracts some of the most highly trained and skilled professionals in the recovery field. Our comprehensive treatment plan combines medical care, clinical therapy and the holistic processes of acupuncture and detoxification massage to encourage overall well-being. These treatments are all tailored to the individual based on a clinical evaluation given at check-in. Following clinical therapy sessions or holistic sessions of acupuncture and massage, there can be a therapeutic release of emotions. Unlike drug rehab in Los Angeles, our facilities offer beautiful surroundings to escape to and process through these emotions.

When considering drug rehab in Los Angeles, consider SouthCoast Recovery just a short drive south along the tranquil shores of Dana Point, California. Our 30, 60, 90 day or 6 month residential drug and alcohol treatment program may be exactly what you need to escape the chaos without, and within. Our skilled professionals will help you recover from alcoholism and drug addiction so you can return home refreshed, renewed and ready to take on the world again – sober. For more information, call today.

12 Step Program

Do you struggle with addiction? While there are many programs available to help overcome addiction, the most successful method has proven to be the 12 step program. There is a lot of misunderstanding surrounding the 12 step program, most often associated with the founding principles of Alcoholics Anonymous. Over the years, the 12 step program has been modified in spin-off programs such as Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Overeaters Anonymous. SouthCoast Recovery introduces the 12 step program as a basis for its holistic recovery program in Dana Point, California.

What is a 12 step program?

A 12 step program is based on taking a series of steps through guided action to effect an internal change so addiction loses its grip. This is accomplished by a personality change, also referred to as a psychic change effected through “spiritual awakening.” While this may be enough to scare people away from the idea of a 12 step program, it has little to do with religion. The idea of relying on a Higher Power to overcome addiction is at the basis of 12 step programs; however, this concept can be anything the individual chooses, even the support group itself.

The first step requires the individual to admit their lives have become unmanageable because of their alcohol or drug use. This is referred to as “Surrender” – letting go of the attempt to control alcohol or drug usage which has generally become uncontrollable by this time. From this first step, the others unfold in progression generally through the help of a sponsor. Through the steps, behavior patterns and consequences are identified and amends are made to those who have been hurt by the individual’s actions while drinking. This process of clearing up emotional wreckage frees the individual to begin building a new life without dragging along emotional baggage and patterns that could lead back to drinking or drug usage.

After working all 12 steps, individuals generally experience a change in personality and behavior. They are then in a position to give back by working the steps with others, helping to maintain their sobriety and the principles of the program for a lifetime. SouthCoast Recovery offers a social model program that encourages sobriety through the support of peers, attendance at area 12 step meetings and role modeling through sponsorship. Residential alcohol and drug treatment is available for 30, 60, 90 days and 6 months in the scenic harbor town of Dana Point, California. For more information, call today to speak to one of our intake coordinators.

Drug addiction is a brain disease. Every type of drug of abuse has its own individual mechanism for changing how the brain functions.

But regardless of which drug a person is addicted to, many of the effects it has on the brain are similar: they range from changes in the molecules and cells that make up the brain, to mood changes, to changes in memory processes and thinking, and sometimes changes in motor skills such as walking and talking. And these changes have a huge influence on all aspects of a person’s behavior.

A drug can become the single most powerful motivator in a drug abuser’s existence. He or she will do almost anything for the drug. This comes about because drug use has changed the individual’s brain, their behavior, their social and other functioning in critical ways.

Multiple sources reveal the extent of harm that smoking can cause. For instance, many people who smoke experience a variety of upper respiratory problems, lung cancer, or heart disease. However, it is never too late to quit.

People who smoke experience all kinds of health problems. Some of the most severe of these include chronic upper respiratory problems (i.e. frequent colds and repeated bronchitis) and lung cancer.

Other people also might experience a stroke or heart attack if they smoke. New evidence even supports a possible linkage between advanced stages of prostate cancer and smoking. The risk of developing serious diseases is higher among those who have smoked the longest. However, if a person has quit smoking already for about ten years, that risk is gradually decreased.

Further studies are still being conducted on the effects that smoking has on the body. However, it is already a well-known fact that smoking causes a major breakdown in the immune system. This leads to a variety of more severe health problems.

It may be difficult for some people to quit smoking at first. However, the people who realize they cannot do it alone are those who may experience the greatest amount of success. The ones that recognize they need help may call a hotline, consult a friend, or join a group.

They may also read articles that reveal tips offered by other people who have successfully quit smoking. Some of these tips offered include placing an object such as a pen between the fingers, or eliminating a variety of environmental triggers.

The most common environmental triggers that cause cravings include the presence of ashtrays, taking coffee breaks, or access to cigarettes nearby. Therefore, many people remove or eliminate any one or all of these in order to help them stop this harmful habit.

Those who are most knowledgeable about the way cigarettes can harm the body are likely to be more motivated to quit. They are willing to take on this challenge because they know it will prevent further health problems if they do.

The Drug Treatment professionals first tend to conduct an addiction assessment. This is done for a variety of reasons, mostly to determine what kind of treatment is in order. The assessment will probably be a list of questions to give the health professionals a history of their patient, such as current situation, length of time and type of drug addiction, criminal history, health history, and so on. They will also ask the new patient about personal goals and ambitions, family structure, and school or work experience. The medical staff will conduct a physical exam, and will note any other disorders the patient is dealing with, such as depression or anxiety. The patient is asked to be open and honest about all these questions, and the answers are to be kept confidential.

The goal of obtaining these answers is to have a measure of how severe the patient’s addiction is, to look at other factors influencing the patient, and also to know how serious the patient is about getting help. The interview process can give the professional a good understanding about the patient and help them find the best treatment for the addiction. It will also help the staff evaluate the progress the patient is making as they undergo treatment.

After the assessment has been completed, the staff will work with the patient to develop a treatment plan. This plan will give the patient an idea of the type of program that is recommended, as well as the length of time they can expect to be in treatment. It may be necessary for the patient to work with different professionals, such as counselors and physicians, and to take part in programs such as group therapy, family counseling, and individual counseling. The treatment plan will make sure that all the pieces are lined up and the patient receives all the care they need.

During this whole process, the patient should be sure they are asking questions they might have, and should be put at ease by the staff about any concerns they have.

Whether one has a problem with alcohol or drugs? Realizing can be a courageous first step to recovery. In alcohol and drug treatment, the using of a reliable screening tool is often the first stage in the assessment process. Screening correctly for an addiction issue relies heavily on one key point- asking the right questions. The screening tool can be administered as part of the drug and alcohol assessment process, or a person can self-assess the severity of his or her substance use through a variety of screening tools available on-line. One advantage of the latter is the benefit of privacy and the reduced risk of judgment which many people with a drug and alcohol issue fear will occur while in the presence of another person.

Whether one completes a screening questionnaire in the presence of a professional, or alone in the privacy of their home; the most important factor is the result of the screening and the link to drug and alcohol treatment when necessary. There are two possible courses of action for someone who screens positive for a substance use issue:

1. If the person exhibits signs of dependency, a referral to an alcohol and drug rehab program equipped to handle addiction issues is appropriate (e.g. inpatient treatment), or

2. If the person has screening results that are more closely aligned with problem drinking or problem drug use, a brief intervention of lower intensity and shorter duration can be conducted.

For drug and alcohol addictions, however, it can be particularly beneficial to seek addiction counseling from trained, licensed professionals who know the process of recovery inside and out. Addiction counseling is often referred to as “talk therapy,” consisting of a sort of hashing out of the issues and forming a gameplan for change. Addiction therapy, however, has to do more with the deep, underlying psychological and physiological motivations behind behavior and the psychological tricks to control that behavior in the future.
Generally all forms of addiction counseling or therapy will focus on positive reinforcement and self-empowerment. These techniques, along with the involvement of family or friends and an organized recovery support group, are particularly important when the patient is recovering from an addiction to stimulants like cocaine or meth.
A particularly important aspect of addiction counseling is educating the patient about the cycle of addiction, and then getting at the root problem in the patient’s life that launched the cycle in the first place. Why do they crave these addictive substances? What can be done to prevent a future relapse into substance abuse?
The addiction counseling expert will empower the person to root out negative life influences when possible, help them identify the issue at the center of their addiction and teach them how to responsibly cope with that issue and other stresses in the future.
When the expert accomplishes this through the use of such tools as motivational interviewing, motivational enhancement therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and family therapy, addiction counseling sessions can be productive and powerful indeed.

Let’s narrow down the counselors focus for this article to only drugs and alcohol. Just as the unique categories of addictions require differing forms of treatment, so do diverse types of drugs. Although OxyContin, Xanax and Ambien are prescription medications, they can be as equally addictive as the street varieties of heroin, ecstasy, crack and cocaine. Whether they are illegal drugs or prescribed medications, each drug has a unique withdrawal pattern with long and short term effects and symptoms. Factors such as age, gender, culture, combinations of addictions, the reason for taking the drug initially, religious conviction, denial, post traumatic stress disorder, trauma issues, family dynamics, support systems and unresolved family issues are all aspects of client care that counselors will need to understand prior to beginning therapy with the addict.

Types of counseling available to those in search of drug rehabilitation services may vary slightly according to the environment of treatment, but almost all are based on psychotherapy principles. These are techniques geared toward restructuring a person’s habits, behavioral patterns and psychological problems in order to empower the addict to make appropriate changes in their life that can lead to freedom from their dependencies.

Counseling involves a lot of talking and interaction either on an individual basis or in a group therapy session. It is common to begin with the one-on-one counseling and progress to the larger group therapy and support group settings. Many, if not most, ministers, priests, pastors, deacons and reverends are trained in addiction counseling for those looking for a spiritual influence in their quest for drug and alcohol free living.

It is possible that the counselor will also include the family unit and the person(s) who are most responsible for enabling the addiction to persist. These individuals will also be trained in methods to support the addict through the recovery stage, even while in a drug rehab program, and onto a bright future without chemical dependency issues.

You can become addicted to most anything if that anything begins to abnormally control your physical and mental being. If you alter your life in drastic ways to fill a craving, exhibit repetitive chain behavior or develop unusually strong desires that are unhealthy for your body, your mind or to others, then you may be experiencing an addiction. For those observing another person who displays an addictive pattern, understand that the addict is normally the last to recognize or admit the problem.

Every addiction is different and depends upon a variety of factors, including the individual, environment, expectation, chemical make up, type of drug, availability, and development of cross addiction. The circumstance of drug withdrawal follows the same pattern.

The severity of symptoms, level of craving, the time it takes to recover or for the drug to completely leave the system, and rather or not the individual requires the supervision of medical care, all depends on the above factors.

Every drug is different and affects the user in unique ways. Some drugs are not only more addictive than others, but are also more difficult to quit, which is directly related to the symptoms that incur through withdrawal. While some believe that the debilitating occurrence of drug withdrawal has nothing to do with chemical dependency, others believe they are co-existant.

The difficulty in quitting an addiction has everything to do with the onset of the negative physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms that encourage users to self medicate in the first place. As the drug addiction progresses, and a tolerance is developed, the mental and physical state of the addict is eroded. In these cases, when the drug begins to leave the system compulsive behavior sets in, as the craving becomes overwhelming. The initial stages of depression and anxiety, create chain reactions within the brain, manipulating the user to do whatever they can to obtain and use the chemical as soon as possible. Like anything else that the body depends upon, if there is a shortage of the particular chemical within the system, the body learns to respond in a variety of ways to alert the individual. As the addiction becomes chronic the situation worsens, as the body craves higher levels of the drug to satisfy its needs. Once again drug withdrawal follows the same pattern. The severity of withdrawal increases as the abuse progresses.

Drug withdrawal ranges in severity from mild irritation to possible death, depending upon the substance. While it is commonly believed that heroin is the most difficult substance to quit, it is actually alcohol that is by far the most debilitating and dangerous of chemical dependency in relation to withdrawal symptoms. When heroin leaves the body it produces flu like symptoms accompanied by profuse sweating, depression, insomnia, delusions, and overall weakness. While these symptoms can be quite painful, they are rarely life threatening, and while it is advised to seek medical supervision, in terms of physical danger, it is not always necessary. Alcohol drug withdrawal on the other hand can be very dangerous. If it is a chronic situation sobriety should not be attempted without the aid of medical help. Delirium tremens are life threatening seizures common in severe cases of alcohol withdrawal. Without supervision, these symptoms could lead to death.

Withdrawal of some degree accompanies the absence of any chemical within the body, that the individual has taken long enough to develop a tolerance to. The degree of tolerance directly depends upon factors of time and amount, while withdrawal depends directly upon the tolerance. Caffeine and nicotine are two substances that are highly used, legal, and quite dangerous. Both are quite addictive and difficult to quit. Nicotine has been compared to heroin in elements of addiction such as compulsion based behavior and craving. There are many drug rehab programs available to assist with withdrawal, detox, and treatment services.
