Drug Rehab Aftercare for Adults

Once you leave drug rehab, the pressures and responsibilities of daily life quickly take over. It can be difficult to maintain serenity and balance during initial sobriety while juggling work and home life. Drug Rehab Aftercare offers a safe place to process the frustrations and emotional overload in early sobriety as well as practice alternative approaches to old patterns. It also helps maintain accountability to your assigned counselor and peer group. Random drug  and alcohol testing is generally a part of Aftercare to ensure you are working an honest program.

Drug Rehab Aftercare: Release Emotional Tension

Drug rehab aftercare takes into account work responsibilities and sessions are usually held after business hours. While it may be the last place you feel like going after a long day at work, drug rehab aftercare can be thought of as an emotional gym where you release emotional tension just as you would release physical tension in a gym. Your counselor and peer group can help give you perspective, insight and alternative means of approach with situations you are struggling with. While you may be reluctant to “air your dirty laundry”, it’s vital to continually process emotional issues that could be considered threats to your sobriety following drug rehab.

It’s likely that in drug rehab, you learned about the disease of alcoholism and drug addiction and discovered that reaching for a drink or a drug is merely symptomatic of deeper, underlying issues. We drink or take drugs to change how we feel; whether it’s a need to bring ourselves up, down, escape or numb how we feel. Emotions are powerful and when suppressed, they come out sideways. When you bottle them up, they eventually come out in a destructive manner whether toward others or yourself.  You could blow up in a fit of rage or suppress them until they manifest as ulcers, headaches, high blood pressure or a variety of other unpleasant ailments. Either way, seeking relief from these emotions can lead you back to alcoholism or drug addiction. This is why following drug rehab it’s necessary to continue processing your emotions in a safe, supportive environment with those who have the training, experience and insight to help you stay balanced.

Drug Rehab Aftercare: Exploring Alternative Methods

The period of time following drug rehab is also a time for exploring alternative methods that help you maintain balance and serenity. SouthCoast Recovery, we introduce acupuncture and massage during drug rehab. You may want to find some practitioners you can develop a relationship with. You may also find that you enjoy yoga or Tai Chi.  All of these Eastern practices help strengthen the connection between mind, body and spirit as well as release stress. Or you may have been diagnosed with Dual Diagnoses, which is the combination of an underlying mood disorder such as depression or Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder (PTSD) coupled with alcoholism or drug addiction. Through the support of your counselor or therapist, you can take action to address mood swings by trying different medication or means with which to manage the chemical imbalance.

Drug Rehab Aftercare is a time for putting the tools you learned in drug rehab into practical application and developing healthier ways to deal with life.
