Why Drug Rehab AfterCare Matters

Why Drug Rehab Aftercare Matters

The period of time following drug rehab offers the greatest chance for relapse. Leaving the safe, sober environment of inpatient drug rehab and returning to the familiar places and people where you used to drink or use can be slippery. This is why SouthCoast Recovery offers continued support following 30-day inpatient drug rehab for 60 or 90 days as well as 6 months. We maintain an open-door policy for our alumni and encourage participation in sober-related activities.

Drug Rehab AfterCare: 30 Days Is Only A Start

Drug rehab is not a magic bullet. One month is barely enough time to get the hang of living life sober. Generally, it can take up to two weeks for withdrawal symptoms to subside. Just as the fog is beginning to lift, it’s time to go home.
Professionals at drug rehab centers do everything possible in a short amount of time to educate clients on the nature of alcoholism and drug addiction while introducing them to new, functional ways in which to handle life without picking up a drink or a drug. At SouthCoast Recovery, we use a combination of clinical and group therapy to address and heal underlying psychological issues that may be contributing to alcohol and drug abuse. Our holistic therapies of acupuncture and massage combined with regular physical exercise and nutrition help the body heal from the inside out. Meditation, hypnotherapy and visualization are introduced to help individuals develop and reprogram their conscious awareness. Finally, the principle of 12-step groups is introduced to help support individuals in maintaining sobriety following inpatient drug rehab. All of these therapies work in a synergistic manner to help the body heal on the level of mind, body and spirit. These methods are introduced but without maintenance, sobriety is precarious. This is why Drug Rehab AfterCare is such a vital part of long-term recovery.

Drug Rehab AfterCare:  Long-term Sobriety

Statistics show the longer an individual can commit to drug rehab, the better their chance at long-term sobriety. Essentially, you receive the tools in drug rehab and then leave with these tools, often without actually having the opportunity or need to practice them. This makes it trying when you return to the life you knew before drug rehab. How do you handle returning to an environment where others drink or take drugs? How do you deal with the pressures of school, work or relationships without wanting to pick up?
Living life sober requires a new way of living that takes time to master. Recovery is a lifestyle, not a 30-day program. Learning how to meet life’s difficulties in ways that are functional and healthy requires practice. This is why Drug Rehab AfterCare programs, Transitional Living and Sober Living programs are available and encouraged.

Drug Rehab AfterCare: Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome

Physical withdrawal symptoms subside in days or weeks during drug rehab, but it takes considerably longer for the brain and neurological functions to heal from long-term exposure to drugs and alcohol. The term Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) refers to the long-term effects of alcoholism and drug abuse. These effects are notably psychological. For instance, memory lapses, inability to concentrate, fragmented thoughts and mood swings are common during the initial period of sobriety. This can make it difficult to handle difficulties that arise, especially right after drug rehab when you are reintegrated back into your normal routine without the comfort or crutch of drugs and alcohol you’ve become accustomed to relying on. Small irritants can quickly escalate and upset the balance you require to remain sober.
Drug Rehab Aftercare offers the continued support of counselors and peers who understand what you are experiencing and can offer the support you need to get through difficulties, sober. SouthCoast Recovery offers continued counseling, peer support, sober living, advanced workshops, career planning and life management skills following drug rehab. This is one of the reasons why we have become the leading drug rehab center in Orange County, California.
