SouthCoast Recovery Green Level Fishing Trip 2009
DANA POINT, CALIFORNIA — What does bass fishing have to do with recovery?
“Plenty,” says Tim Best, a green level drug and alcohol counselor at SouthCoast Recovery. “Clients get so busy working the program that this offers a chance to step out of the normal routine for a little self-reflection. Being out on the water and looking back to land is healing. It’s a form of meditation where the only thing that matters is catching the next fish. They are caught in the moment, which is a good place to be.”
Eight green-level clients and three staff members took advantage of a clear day in the midst of June gloom for a Bass fishing excursion that left the Dana Point Harbor at 10 a.m. and returned just after 3 p.m. Participating clients paid for their own portion of the trip while SouthCoast Recovery provided lunches and transportation. Each client caught at least one, maybe two fish. “Me?” says Tim Best. “I caught way more.”
Clients will enjoy the “catch of the day” at a SouthCoast Recovery Thursday night fish fry at one of the green-level homes. “Green level” is the transitional phase following initial 30-day inpatient, termed red-level. “This is where all the cool stuff happens,” says Tim Best. Clients in green level start applying the tools learned during inpatient and begin accomplishing the tasks that come with building a new life in sobriety. This may include getting a job, enrolling in college, handling legal issues associated with drug and alcohol usage, finding a place to live or simply learning new skills necessary to move forward in life.
SouthCoast Recovery offers a green level transitional living program in Orange County that is unlike any other. Career life skills and continued counseling within the supportive environment of SouthCoast Recovery help clients transition smoothly from a life ravaged by drugs and alcohol back into productive members of society. Green level clients enjoy individual counseling, group sessions, workshops and regular excursions outside the center. The week prior to the fishing trip, green level clients enjoyed the day at Magic Mountain in Ventura, California.
