Meth Addiction and Treatment
|
|
|
|
Methamphetamine appeared in
the 1960's as a more potent version of amphetamines, a stimulant drug
used to treat certain medical conditions. In the 1980's, drug traffickers
brought ICE, a more potent free-base form of methamphetamine into
the United States. Meth addiction has made a dramatic comeback within
the last three years, more than tripling in overdose victims. Methamphetamine
is produced in makeshift clandestine laboratories. Meth cooks usually
have no chemistry of scientific background. The ingredients for meth
are various poisons and flammable materials making it very dangerous.
There is no way to know how strong street meth may be or what is actually
in it.
A more potent form of amphetamine, meth can be either smoked, eaten,
snorted or injected. Meth effects on the body is similar to that of
the natural chemical adrenaline, but with deadly side effects. Once
in the body, meth quickly affects the central nervous system, speeding
up the heart and increasing blood pressure uncontrollably. While the
high from one hit of crack lasts about 15-20 minutes, a meth high
can last for hours. Smoking the rock form, ICE, can produce a high
for up to 24 hours. Users on a binge can go for days without eating
or sleeping.
At SouthCoast Recovery, we have developed a treatment program that
is highly effective in treating meth addiction. Because meth stays
in a person's body longer than other drugs like cocaine or alcohol,
a longer program is generally recommended to treat such addiction.
Our 90 day meth drug rehab program is far more effective than 30 day
regimens. After initial detoxification and treatment for any psychotic
symptoms and life-threatening conditions such as extreme high blood
pressure and heart rate, the healing can begin.
The first phase of recovery is learning about the disease. We have extensive one-on-one counseling designed to find the specific triggers and reasons for using.
All addictions are usually a different expression of the same problem; feeling emotions. When we feel an emotion that is unpleasant, addicts use whatever substance (alcohol,
cocaine, meth, heroin, etc.) turns off that emotion most effectively. Most people come to us with a variety of substance abuse problems and even other addictions
such as gambling, sex and the internet. Switching between various combinations of the "off-switch" is almost universal.
Our team of counselors, marriage and family therapist and a psychologist work with the individual to identify specific causes and then develop a treatment
plan with the best chance of success. We have massage and acupuncture to help the body psysically heal. Daily visits to a health center are also included.
After the first 30 days of treatment, the focus shifts to replacing old habits with new habits and goal setting. Setting a goal in early recovery is crucial
to long term sobriety. Our program challenges the clients to find a direction for their sober life and initiate action in that direction. Whether a person
needs to find a job, return to school or take care of Court issues, we are here to help. Our safe, structured environment allows people to explore their talents
and find out who they are.
