Percocet Treatment, Percocet Addiction Treatment, Percocet Rehab California Percocet's® active ingredients are oxycodone, a narcotic (opiate) pain medication (analgesic), and acetaminophen (a non-narcotic pain medication), which relieves pain better than either medication taken alone. Oxycodone acts on the central nervous system and smooth muscle tissue, slowing the central nervous system. It is not clear exactly how acetaminophen works to ease pain. Percocet is only available by prescription. Percocet is similar to other narcotics in terms of its effects on individual and chance of addiction. Percocet comes as a tablet, capsule, and liquid. Percocet when abused can be taken orally in pill form, chewed, or crushed (then snorted like cocaine).

Percocet works by slowing the central nervous system. It should be used with caution when combined with other drugs that have similar effects, such as:

*Alcohol
*Antihistamines
*Aspirin
*Benzodiazepines
*Desyrel®
*MAOi’s
*Other Narcotic Pain Medications
*Sleep Medications and Tranquilizers

Percocet side effects include but are not limited to:

* drowsiness
* constricted pupils
* nausea
* euphoria
* dizziness
* light-headeness
* sedation
* vomiting
* constipation
* depressed feeling
* exaggerated feeling of well-being
* itchy skin
* skin rash
* slowed breathing

Percocet addiction has many symptoms but often it is difficult for friends and family to recognize them. Contrary to popular belief, one need not abuse Percocet daily to have a problem with Percocet addiction; the pattern of abuse may be occasional or habitual. The abuse is usually an intensely private affair between the abuser and a bottle of Percocet. And, the pilltaker is not subject to the social stigma associated with the shadowy world of street drug dealing. Percocet is a narcotic (oxycodone) and acetaminophen combination. They are combined to get a synergistic effect on pain. Oxycodone is similar to other narcotics in terms of effect and addiction. Acetaminophen is better known as Tylenol. Percocet addiction can affect the young, middle aged, or elderly. Individuals addicted to Percocet may come from any walk of life, hold entry level or high positions, be parents or grandparents, single or married. Often, the addiction to percocet develops without the individual realizing it until it begins to control their life. When an individual exceeds the dosage prescribed or seeks to obtain Percocet after the time prescribed by their physician, they should be awear of the posibility that they have developed a Percocet addiction. Abruptly stoping or reducing the intake of Percocet can cause severe withdrawal symptoms. These begin six to eight hours after the last dosage.

Percocet addiction withdrawal symptoms include but are not limited to:

* feeling as though you have the flu
* gastrointestinal distress
* anxiety
* nausea
* insomnia
* muscle pain
* fevers
* sweating
* runny nose and eyes

What is percocet?

Percocet is the brand name for an opioid analgesic containing the active ingredient oxycodone (also found in Percodan®). Percocet is a legal narcotic that is available, by prescription, to treat severe pain. Percocet is a controlled-release medication that, when used correctly, provides extended relief of pain associated with cancer, back pain, or arthritis. However, often when the drug is abused, the tablets are crushed and snorted, chewed, or mixed with water and injected- eliminating the time-release factor and allowing for a quick and intense rush to the brain. This practice can lead to overdosing on Percocet's active ingredient, oxycodone, by releasing too much of the medication into the bloodstream too quickly. Percocet is highly addictive - so higher doses of the drug must be taken when a tolerance develops. Illicit users of the drug have risen drastically and steadily over the last few years.

What Does Percocet Look Like?

Percocet most commonly exists in tablet form. These round or oval pills come in 10mg, 20mg, 40mg, 80mg and 160mg dosages. Percocet also comes in capsule or liquid form.

Short-term Effects

The most serious risk associated with Percocet, is respiratory depression. Because of this, Percocet should not be combined with other substances that slow down breathing, such as alcohol, antihistamines (like some cold or allergy medication), barbiturates, or benzodiazepines. Other common side effects include constipation, nausea, sedation, dizziness, vomiting, headache, dry mouth, sweating, and weakness. Toxic overdose and/or death can occur by taking the tablet broken, chewed, or crushed. People who abuse the drug (by removing the time-release coating) will experience effects for up to 5 hours. The high that is felt is opiate-like - a sedate, euphoric feeling.

Long-term Effects

Using Percocet chronically can result in increased tolerance to the drug in which higher doses of the medication must be taken to receive the initial effect. Over time, Percocet will be come physically addictive, causing a person to experience withdrawal symptoms when the drug is not present. Symptoms of withdrawal include restlessness, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting, cold flashes with goose bumps, and involuntary leg movements.
