Addiction Treatment: Intervention

For most alcoholics and addicts, change occurs only because an outside circumstance forces change. It could be initiated by the courts in the wake of a DUI, divorce papers issued by a spouse, loss of a loved one or family members putting their foot down and saying, “No more.”

If you don't feel you can successfully initiate this change without professional help, it's time to consider an Intervention. An intervention is a choreographed attempt by loved ones to persuade an individual to get professional help for their addiction, usually at an inpatient treatment center. An intervention is best conducted with an interventionist, an individual trained specifically to coordinate and orchestrate the intervention so the likelihood of its effectiveness is increased.

The process of intervention is to empower the family as well as the addict or alcoholic to overcome addiction. The interventionist typically meets with the loved ones who will be at the intervention beforehand, usually family members and friends, to determine the best approach and role play various scenarios that could play out.

If the intervention is a success, it's not just the addicted individual who will be healing over the course of the next few months. Addiction is a family disease. Family members and friends also need to make time to heal the wounds inflicted by addiction and this may require professional assistance as well. It's important to select a treatment center for your loved one that offers family counseling or has a Marriage & Family Therapist (MFT) on staff to assist in healing relationship rifts and wounds caused by addiction.
