There are many different factors when it comes to drug or alcohol abuse and addiction. In the past few years SouthCoast Recovery has seen a increase in the number of people that are seeking recovery from drug addiction that also have some kind of learning disbility. Combined with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorders, and depression, SouthCoast Recovery has taken the time to find a path for people that are suffering from this combination of disorders and drug addiction. Learning disabilities can bring shame and guilt into a person’s life, as people grow in life there are some ways of thinking that promote drug use; for people that have learning disabilities this shame and guilt can help with rationalizing drug use. Shame is a painful emotion resulting from an awareness of inadequacy or guilt and as a young person we sometimes do not know how to deal with this type of emotion.
Not knowing how to deal with our emotions often results in people looking for relief in their lives and drug abuse is an increasingly common solution to this problem. Frequent thoughts or feelings that people with learning disabilities have are: I need to feel better now, am I the only person that has this problem, my peers will think I am stupid, I feel like people do not understand me, and am I even going to be able to attend college? These questions and feelings of inadequacy can manifest into stress and then PTSD, which can lead to drug abuse as a way of relieving those emotions. As young people living in this kind of situation everyday can become very overwhelming to that person. Continuing education, going for that good job, and living a better quality life suffers over time. Because of this process, drug use often increases and starts to form into addictive habits, not only with the drugs themselves, but also with shame and guilt as an undertone for living.
Over long periods of time we grow with this undertone and it becomes a way of life. Living an addict’s life is full of situations that most people will never know or understand. The things that we do while we are abusing drugs can help cause the on set of Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) a severe and ongoing emotional reaction to an extreme psychological trauma (living with learning disabilities or prolonged drug addiction and abuse) The latter may involve experiencing someone's actual death or a threat to someone else's life, serious physical injury, or threat to physical and/or psychological integrity, to a degree that usual psychological defenses are incapable of coping. It is important to make a distinction between PTSD and Traumatic stress, which is a similar condition, but of less intensity and duration. Drug abuse can and does often cause death. The choices that we make under the influence are not always the best ones.
As you can see over long periods of time, as we go through life we can and do create situations that provide for the on set of other disorders. When making the decision to start recovering from drug addiction or alcohol abuse, we need to consider that we need to get to the root of the problem so that there is a way for you to approach your new life and new way of thinking. A learning disability does not mean that you are stupid or that you can’t have a better job and better life. What it means is that the learning process is different for you. We would like to help you to find your way to a better life and way of living. The first step is to want to change.
First of all we offer treatment, and in most cases an end, not just a reduction, to the causes of your addiction. We do this by treating the unresolved feelings at the root of your problems. We have medical doctors who can offer medications during the process but our goal is dealing with your problems rather than finding the best prescribed drug to deal with them.
Second of all, we offer treatment that is reasonable in cost, as opposed to hospitals where the costs are prohibitive. You will find that the cost per month is far smaller than the cost for a week at a hospital, and we offer a cure, not additional medications.
Third, you will be staying in a beautiful home in South Orange County, with other residents who have similar problems. Contact with other residents is one of the most beneficial of the treatment modalities we offer. Groups, twelve step meetings and individual therapy are all based on healing you, with no other agenda.
Fourth, there is a staff of experts in treating those with learning disabilities who will walk you through the whole process. You will receive a psychologist’s care who has forty-three years of experience working with the learning disabled. The staff is hired both for their professional skills and their ability to show love. They are required to treat the clients as they would like to be treated if they came with a problem. We are indeed a love-based program!
The treatment procedure is a full day, every day, of solving your depression in the shortest possible time. It is our experience that curing addiction does not take a long time, but it is painful to process the memories that may have caused your substance abuse. Therapy is painful, but from the start you will see progress and know that it not only works, but is not way off in the future somewhere.
