Long-term methamphetamine abuse almost always leads to addiction, violent behavior, anxiety, insomnia, and other types of mood disturbances, and violent. Additionally, psychotic symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, and paranoia will occur; these symptoms can last for months or years after methamphetamine use has ceased.

Meth Abuse Requires Unique Treatment

Methamphetamine addiction takes it's toll and leaves serious physical and psychological problems that can be dangerous if not properly treated. Methamphetamine addicts may lose their teeth quickly from a condition known as "meth mouth". This effect is not caused by any corrosive effects of the drug itself. The American Dental Association, meth mouth "is probably caused by a combination of drug-induced psychological and physiological changes resulting in xerostomia (dry mouth), extended periods of poor oral hygiene, frequent consumption of high calorie, carbonated beverages and tooth grinding and clenching." Like other drugs which stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, methamphetamine can cause decreased production of acid-fighting saliva and increased thirst, the result of which is an increased risk for tooth decay, especially when thirst is quenched by high-sugar drinks. Users may also exhibit sexually compulsive behaviors while using meth and the potential dangers of unprotected sex or other reckless sexual behavior may contribute to the increased spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among abusers of methamphetamines. Among other sexual side-effects reported by methamphetamine users are: the ability to have sex for long periods of time, increased libido and sexual pleasure, and an inability to reach orgasm or physical release. Methamphetamine abuse in the US is highest in Native Hawaiians and Pacific islander populations (2.2%), as well as, among Native Americans (1.7%), Whites (0.7%) and Hispanics (0.5%), and much lower in Asians (0.2%) and blacks (0.1%). According to one study in large cities, 13% of men having sex with men used methamphetamine in the previous 6 months.

Crystal MethMethamphetamine addiction basically has three patterns: low use, binge use, and high use. Low-use addiction describes a user who does not have psychological addiction to meth but uses methamphetamine on a casual basis by ingesting or snorting it. Binge and high-use abusers have a psychological addiction to meth and prefer smoking or injecting methamphetamine to achieve a faster and stronger high. As with the abuse of other stimulants, it is possible for individuals to become quickly addicted to methamphetamines. Withdrawal symptoms associated with discontinuing methamphetamine use include: fatigue, depression, and disturbance of sleep patterns. Further, taking high doses of a meth may result in dangerously high body temperature and an irregular heartbeat. There is also the potential for cardiovascular failure or lethal seizures.

Methamphetamine withdrawal's, length and severity of depression is related to how much/often Meth was used. Some withdrawal symptoms including, cravings, exhaustion, depression, mental confusion, restlessness, insomnia, deep or disturbed sleep, may last up to 48 hours.

Q. What is methamphetamine?

A. Methamphetamine is a chemical variation of amphetamine, which is more concentrated. It is more addictive and has a stronger effect on the central nervous system.

Q. What's the difference between "methamphetamine" and "crystal meth"?

A. Crystal meth (methamphetamine hydrochloride) is made from methamphetamine, using chemicals to hydrogenate ephedrine molecules. In this form, it appears as clear, chunky crystals.

Q. How is crystal meth usually produced?

A. Crystal meth is easy to produce from approximately 15 components, including pseudoephedrine (the major ingredient in most over-the-counter cold remedies), red phosphorous, iodine, ammonia, paint thinner, ether, anti-freeze, drain cleaner and battery acid.

Q. Where does crystal meth come from?

A. There are small labs in kitchens and garages all over the U.S. These labs can usually only make small amounts, but the production costs are relatively small in comparison to its selling price. It is also imported from labs in China, South Korea, the Philippines and Taiwan.

Q. Are there other names for this drug?

A. Crystal meth is also known as tina, chalk, ice, crank, rock, glass, quartz, speed and "redneck cocaine" (perhaps because it is easier and cheaper to acquire than cocaine).
