Drug Rehab Aftercare for Teens

Written on: August 18th, 2009 By:

Drug Rehab Aftercare for Teens

Drug rehab aftercare for teens is likely the last place any teenager wants to be. A young person dealing with alcoholism and drug addiction during the awkward transition from child to adult is likely to be more resistant to drug rehab aftercare and want to ditch any notion of continuing care following drug rehab. While this is rather expected, drug rehab aftercare for teens can make the difference between struggling with addiction for years or building a new self image as a young sober adult.

Drug Rehab Aftercare for Teens: Transition

Once anyone leaves the safe environment of drug rehab, the struggle to build a new life as a sober person begins. It’s not an easy transition for anyone and for teenagers especially, age can be a benefit or a detriment, depending on personality. Teenagers are impressionable and soak up new information better than adults. Drug rehab treatment can be effective at introducing a new way of life independent of drugs and alcohol. Drug rehab aftercare for teens can then effectively build on this information and help solidify new behavior patterns that were introduced during drug rehab. If the teenager accepts this new way of life, years of pain and struggle with addiction can be avoided.

Drug Rehab Aftercare for Teens: Resistance

On the other hand, the very nature of a teenager lends itself to rebellion. Wanting to experiment without someone “telling them what to do” can lead to resisting the very help they need to overcome alcoholism and drug addiction. Teenagers may feel they are too young to be saddled with this disease. In addition, being seen as different during this transitional time is generally not desirable or acceptable. Even teenagers that exhibit rebellious attitudes or an anti-establishment approach by embracing punk, gothic or street culture still have a need to belong. This is why gangs thrive. Acting out with drugs and alcohol at a young age may bring just the attention and/or sense of belonging they desire.

Drug Rehab Aftercare for Teens: Acceptance

For these reasons, drug rehab aftercare for teens is an important follow-up to drug rehab. An initial 30-day program is just the beginning of a lifestyle change necessary to live life without turning to alcohol and drugs. Drug rehab aftercare for teens offers a safety net during a delicate time when they could either embrace or reject the information presented during drug rehab. SouthCoast Recovery offers aftercare programs for people 18 and over that addresses areas such as self-image, values, goal-setting, career guidance, life management and core questions that relate to life purpose. In addition, we offer continued counseling, group therapy, advanced workshops and concepts related to building a new image and a new life in sobriety all within the sober and supportive environment of SouthCoast Recovery. Signs of Drug Abuse

Written on: August 18th, 2009 By:

Signs of Drug Abuse

Drug abuse is generally a precursor to drug addiction, although not always. Some people start using drugs and alcohol as a response to major life transitions or traumatic events that may be unsettling. This could mean changing jobs, schools or geographic locations or it could be the loss of a loved one. If drug abuse is detected early enough, it can be interrupted by professionals at a drug rehab center before it spirals into drug addiction. Signs of drug abuse take many forms.

One of the most obvious signs of drug abuse is appearance. People who are under the influence generally exhibit a change in appearance. They may begin to dress differently or pay less attention to overall appearance. People under the influence may also frequently wear sunglasses as the appearance of the eyes is a strong indicator of drug abuse.  For example:

  • Constricted pupils (pinpoints): Indicates abuse of opiate drugs such as heroin, morphine or prescription painkillers such as Vicodin or OxyContin
  • Droopy, unfocused eyes: Exhibits signs of benzodiazepine drug abuse, such as Valium or Xanax
  • Red, irritated eyes with a dazed look: Indicates signs of marijuana use
  • Large pupils, glassy eyes: Signs of stimulant use, such as cocaine or meth
  • Glassy eyes, vacant stare: May indicate person under the influence of psycho stimulant, such as LSD
  • Runny eyes: Indicative of inhalant abuse or “huffing” paint or glue

These are just some of the signs of drug abuse. Others include a change in normal patterns and routines, such as hanging out with a different crowd, change in sleeping patterns (not sleeping or sleeping too much), missing work or school, poor performance, irritability, mood swings, and/or deterioration of close relationships. If you suspect a loved one needs help for alcohol or drug abuse, the time to get help is now, before it gets worse.

At SouthCoast Recovery in Dana Point, California, we offer specialized residential drug and alcohol treatment tailored to each individual for 30, 60, 90 days and 6 months. Stop drug abuse before it spirals into drug addiction.  Call our drug rehab center today to find out what to do when you suspect signs of drug abuse. Our intake counselors can help you take the steps necessary to help a loved one get out of trouble and on with life.

The Importance of Drug Rehab

Written on: June 30th, 2009 By:

The Importance of Drug Rehab

Many people underestimate the importance of drug rehab. This is because unless you’ve personally experienced drug rehab, you don’t know what to expect. It seems like an expensive way to get sober when you could just decide to quit drinking or taking drugs and start going to 12-step meetings on a daily basis. If this is really all it took to stop, there would be no need for drug rehabs. Unfortunately, most people in the grips of alcoholism and drug addiction find it extremely difficult if not impossible to quit on their own and few actually want to. Most often its loved ones who recognize the importance of drug rehab in saving the life of someone addicted to drugs and alcohol.

One of the major symptoms of alcoholism and drug addiction is denial. People who are struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction often can’t see how bad it really is. The alcohol or drug is so important that everything else pales in comparison. The compulsion in their minds drives them to get more and more with little regard for anything that may interfere, such as work, school or relationships – especially if the person involved is questioning their alcohol or drug intake. A person in the grips of alcoholism or drug addiction will often hide or minimize how much they are drinking or using, even from themselves.

Someone in the grips of addiction may really want to quit but find that they can’t. The withdrawal symptoms and cravings that follow can be overwhelming enough to send them right back to the nearest corner for liquor or drugs. The importance of drug rehab may be most apparent during alcohol or drug detox when the body begins to exhibit symptoms of withdrawal. Drug rehab traditionally offers a safe and comfortable form of detox to gradually ease the body through the worst of the symptoms that could be dangerous should an individual just go “cold turkey”.  Some of these symptoms can include severe muscle aches, hallucinations and life-threatening seizures. At SouthCoast Recovery, we offer state-licensed medical detox that provides a mild form of prescription medication to gently ease the body off of drugs and alcohol for as little discomfort as possible. Clients are encouraged to rest, relax and rejuvenate during this time with plenty of sleep and nutrition as their body adjusts to the absence of chemicals it has become accustomed to. The introduction of acupuncture, herbal remedies and massage therapy help to ease discomfort and stress on the body while awakening its innate ability to heal itself from the inside out.

Having these treatments carried out by caring, knowledgeable and professional staff members also plays a vital role in the importance of drug rehab. Guidance and support offered within a safe and sober environment is a vital link in the success of a drug rehab program. This environment of “tough love” helps hold an individual accountable in the early stages of sobriety whereas if they were to try it on their own, the combination of withdrawal and cravings would likely be no match for will-power.

At SouthCoast Recovery, our professional treatment team has over 100 years combined experience in drug and alcohol treatment. In addition to detox and holistic therapies, we also offer clinical therapy to help heal underlying emotional issues that could be contributing to alcoholism and drug addiction. Working through these issues is necessary in order to help remove any wounds that could trip a person up in early sobriety. Alcohol and drug use are but symptomatic of deeper issues. The importance of drug rehab cannot be underestimated in helping an individual heal physically, emotionally and spiritually. This helps set a solid foundation for lifelong recovery. If you or a loved one is struggling, don’t try to get sober on your own. We can help. SouthCoast Recovery offers 30, 60, 90 day and 6 month residential drug and alcohol treatment in south Orange County.

Drug Rehab for Seniors

Drug Rehab for Seniors

Senior citizens are a relatively overlooked population when it comes to alcoholism and drug addiction, and yet there are many variables that can contribute to the need for drug rehab for seniors. Some of the more dominant factors that contribute to substance abuse in the elderly include an abundance of free time following retirement, lack of purpose, loneliness and health ailments.

Retiring after years of work is a major lifestyle change that can bring a sense of emptiness and lack of contribution if other means are not put in place to fill the space that has been created. Taking up hobbies or enlisting in courses at the local community college can do wonders to enrich one’s life and rekindle a sense of purpose as well as establish a sense of connection. This sense of connection can be especially  important to emotional and mental health, especially in the later years. If a senior is widowed or divorced and a family support system is not close by, this can lend itself to loneliness and an attempt to fill that loneliness with abuse that leads to alcoholism or drug addiction. Emotional despair can also weaken the immune system and lead to poor health that may require more prescription medications, some of which can be habit-forming. The intent may not be to abuse prescription drugs but misuse can and frequently does occur in the elderly due to confusion or the inability to decipher instructions.

Prescription drug abuse is one of the more predominant factors leading to drug rehab for seniors. Having a doctor prescribe medication for pain somehow justifies the use of narcotic pharmaceuticals, whether the pain is real or imagined. A senior going through serious emotional pain due to loss, death or separation from a loved one may request tranquilizers or sedatives in order to sleep. Panic attacks and anxiety may necessitate the need for similar barbiturates or benzodiazapines, such as Valium or Klonapin. Without help, drug addiction may be quick to follow. SouthCoast Recovery in Dana Point, California, offers clinical therapy in combination with advanced holistic therapies for overall well being in mind, body and spirit . Our clinical therapist has 47 years experience in diagnosing and addressing underlying issues associated with alcoholism and drug addiction. In addition, we offer a specialized track for the unique nature of prescription drug addiction. Clients live and work together in residential homes that provide a warm, comfortable environment for relaxation and rejuvenation in between treatments. Acupuncture and massage help to relieve discomfort associated with physical aches and pains, providing an alternative approach to physician visits and prescription drugs. For more information on how SouthCoast Recovery can help you or a loved one overcome alcoholism or prescription drug addiction, please call. Our intake coordinators will be happy to address any questions you may have about drug rehab for seniors.

Drug Rehab for Men

Written on: June 29th, 2009 By:

Drug Rehab for Men

Men and women have different needs, even when it comes to drug rehab. Whereas women are more comfortable expressing their feelings, societal expectations have always dictated when it’s “okay” for a man to express his. Using alcohol or drugs to stuff down emotional pain or discomfort is very common for men and over time, can lead to alcoholism or drug addiction. Drug rehab for men that addresses this conditioning is an important aspect to consider when choosing a drug rehab.

Men receive messages from society that influence their behavior. Have you ever seen the hard-drinking detective cry? No, he pours himself another shot of scotch, neat. The connection between emotions and avoidance of those emotions is a driving force toward addiction. Emotions are energy. Continually suppressing emotions leads to physical ailments, such as high blood pressure, ulcers, anxiety and depression. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a direct by-product of suppressing emotions over time and is typically associated with men returning from active war zones although it can also be a result of other life-threatening trauma. Many people who struggle with alcoholism or drug addiction and need drug rehab also have dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders; that is, the presence of an underlying psychological imbalance that may provoke alcoholism or drug addiction in the act of self-medicating.

SouthCoast Recovery offers more individual clinical therapy and drug & alcohol counseling sessions than any other drug rehab center in Orange County, California. In addition, we offer alternative measures for handling stress such as acupuncture, massage therapy and a complimentary pass to the local fitness center. Handling any type of emotional situation in early sobriety can be extremely uncomfortable. The loss of a job or a loved one, ending a relationship or establishing new ones, moving or any major life transition can lead men right back into alcoholism or drug addiction. At SouthCoast Recovery, our drug rehab for men program helps bridge this gap through a combination of clinical therapy, holistic therapies, group therapy, innovative workshops and introduction to the 12-step model of recovery that provides group support following initial inpatient drug rehab and alcohol treatment. In addition, we offer transitional living that provides continued counseling, career guidance and life skills management to help men transition back into society with as little stress and emotional discomfort as possible. At SouthCoast Recovery, we show you how expressing emotions can be a great strength, not a weakness.

SouthCoast Recovery offers a state-licensed facility in the upscale beach community of Dana Point, California, for 30, 60, 90 day and 6 month residential treatment. For more information, please call and speak with one of our intake coordinators. We’ll help you overcome your addiction and get back on track.

Drug Rehab for Women

Written on: June 29th, 2009 By:

Drug Rehab for Women

Women are emotionally and physically different than men. While this may seem rather obvious, it’s often overlooked when it comes to treating women for alcoholism and drug addiction. A woman tends to put the needs and wants of others before her own, which may lead her to turn to alcohol or drugs for relief, escape or as a substitute for the basics of self-care. Her experience in attempting to get sober will also be different than a man’s. For this reason, drug rehab for women is an important consideration to make when seeking professional help.

Women process drugs and alcohol differently than men because their bodies have less water and more fatty tissue. Toxins are stored in fatty tissues which means they have a higher presence in a woman’s body and it takes longer to process them out. This puts women who abuse alcohol or drugs at a greater risk than men for substance-related health problems. Less body water, higher fat deposits and different digestive enzymes account for rapid elevation in blood alcohol levels among women. As a result, cirrhosis of the liver, brain damage and cancers develop at the same rates in female alcoholics compared with men who drink twice as much.

A woman who is in the grips of alcoholism or drug addiction is also more likely to enter into and excuse an abusive relationship, be the victim of sexual violence or assault or unknowingly harm her unborn child. Alcohol can harm a baby in the womb even before the mother knows she is pregnant. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a set of physical and mental defects that a baby may suffer from being exposed to alcohol in the womb. These defects may include brain damage, facial deformities and growth defects. There is no consumption of alcohol that has been proven to be safe for unborn babies. Women also tend toward depression more than men and this is markedly increased when alcohol or drugs are introduced. These are just a few of the factors a good drug rehab for women will consider.

SouthCoast Recovery’s drug rehab offers gender-specific housing for women as well as a specialized depression program that parallels our drug and alcohol treatment program. The term for women who suffers from both substance abuse and an underlying mood disorder, such as depression or anxiety, is dual diagnoses or co-occurring disorders. Studies show that women have higher suicide attempts but men are more successful. Our clinical therapist has over 44 years addressing depression, psychological trauma and other underlying issues contributing to alcoholism, drug addiction and other self-destructive behaviors. Working together with female and professional staff members, we provide a safe environment to process and work through emotional issues.

Women are also more influenced by the aesthetics of their environment. SouthCoast Recovery offers drug rehab for women in the scenic harbor town of Dana Point, California, with holistic care and therapies to help encourage the body’s own innate power to heal. These therapies include personalized acupuncture, herbal remedies, massage, meditation, yoga, visualization and hypnotherapy. Our holistic approach to wellness complements traditional clinical care within a 12-step recovery model for a complete approach to mind, body and spirit renewal. At SouthCoast Recovery, we offer drug rehab services specifically tailored to each woman’s own unique needs and goals. This is a place you can stop focusing on everyone else and simply focus on you. For more information on how we can help you or a loved one overcome alcoholism and drug addiction, call and speak with one of our intake coordinators today. We offer 30, 60, 90 day and 6 month alcohol treatment and drug rehab for women.

Drug Rehab for Young Adults

Written on: June 29th, 2009 By:

Drug Rehab for Young Adults

Studies show that the heaviest drinking and drug experimentation is conducted by people in their teens to mid-twenties, not only in the United States but all over the world. Binge-drinking especially tends to be prevalent and its believed that one in five young adults could pass a clinical test for alcoholism and drug addiction at this age. Fortunately, many outgrow this stage and quit abusing drugs and alcohol on their own. For those that don’t or find they can’t, it may be time to consider drug rehab for young adults.

Drug rehab for young adults is the last place most young adults ever thought they’d be or want to be, especially with the spring break-style parties happening every weekend. Yet statistically over 100,000 young adults ages 18-25 end up in drug rehab every year and that number is growing. While many will resist getting help because they think they are too young to be in the stages of alcoholism and drug addiction, the truth is that the sooner they receive professional help at drug rehab, the better.

This is a difficult time in life to be side-tracked by alcoholism or drug addiction. The period of time during high school and college is one of self-discovery and self-development. Psychologists refer to three key areas of development during this time, including separation from parents, discovering one’s life purpose (career) and finding a mate. When addiction takes precedence, these three areas of development are often delayed until much later in life and may never be fulfilled at all. For this reason, it is vital that when choosing a drug rehab for young adults there is more offered than a traditional drug rehab format. For example, many drug rehab facilities are based around the 12-step program and while there may be some educational modules to support the disease model of addiction there are few workshops that illustrate the connection between the human mind, body and spirit. This innovative approach can be found at SouthCoast Recovery in Dana Point, California. Our team is on the cutting edge of new discoveries found in treating alcoholism and drug addiction. We incorporate workshops on values and goal-setting with holistic therapies of acupuncture, massage therapy, herbal remedies, meditation and yoga to strengthen the mind, body and spirit connection. In this way, young adults who may have damaged some of their developmental areas through alcoholism and drug addiction are provided the forum to discover who they are, what they want and discover what it will take for them to achieve it.

Alcoholism and drug addiction is merely symptomatic of underlying issues. SouthCoast Recovery offers a clinical therapist with 47 years experience in diagnosing and treating underlying issues associated with alcoholism and drug addiction. This could be family history, chemical imbalance, emotional issues, childhood or adult trauma or abuse, or a combination thereof. Treating young adults is different from treating children or older adults as it is a time of emotional fluctation and development. Events and circumstances that have been repressed may begin to come out sideways. Sexual abuse, divorce, victimization or any sort of traumatic experience may begin to surface in unhealthy behavior patterns. Alcohol and drug abuse may be a means to escape or numb emotions associated with these events. Professionals at a drug rehab for young adults have the training to address these sensitive issues and help remove existing barriers to recovery.

At SouthCoast Recovery, we offer 30, 60, 90 day and 6 month residential drug and alcohol treatment in the scenic harbor town of Dana Point, California. Our residential homes are gender-specific and co-ed. We use a social model approach as it’s been determined that young adults especially respond to role modeling and peer support in modifying behaviors. We offer more individual sessions than any other drug rehab facility in Orange County, including clinical therapy, drug and alcohol counseling, acupuncture and massage therapy. Our program format incorporates the finest clinical and holistic therapy within a 12-step model for overall well-being in mind, body and spirit. For more information on drug rehab for young adults, contact SouthCoast Recovery today.

Drug Rehab for Teens

Written on: June 29th, 2009 By:

Drug Rehab for Teens

Considering drug rehab for teens requires considering whether substance abuse can be serious enough at such a young age to warrant drug rehab or alcohol treatment. The answer is an unfortunate yes. Alcoholism and drug addiction can strike people of all age, race, background, culture or socioeconomic status. Catching it early can interrupt a deadly spiral of poor decision-making that can severely impact the rest of a young person’s for life. If you think your teenager may have a problem with drugs or alcohol, it may be time to consider drug rehab for teens.

Many people view drug rehab as a last resort measure. Parents may resist professional help, believing they can control it by imposing strict penalties or doling out punishment. Yet if your teenager is afflicted with alcoholism or drug addiction, you are dealing with someone who is rapidly losing or has already lost the ability to quit on their own. One of the added difficulties in convincing parents or even teenagers they may need drug rehab for teens is the matter of age. How can someone so young already be diagnosed with alcoholism or drug addiction, afflictions that typically take years to manifest?

This is more true for alcoholism than drug addiction. Certain drugs are highly addictive and can create instant addiction when tried the first time. Methamphetamines and crack cocaine are a few examples of highly addictive drugs. Heroin and certain opiate-based prescription painkillers such as OxyContin are a few others. Prescription drug addiction among teenagers is on the rise and they are easily gotten – straight out of the medicine cabinet of unsuspecting parents. Other factors contributing to teenage addiction may result from genetic propensity, environment, peer influence, family dynamics and behavioral issues arising from personality or mood disorders. It’s estimated that some 70% of people who need treatment for alcoholism and drug addiction have some form of underlying mood disorder or chemical imbalance that may contribute to their desire to self-medicate the symptoms, such as depression or bi-polar disorder. The diagnosis of substance abuse in conjunction with a mood disorder is termed dual diagnoses or co-occurring disorders.

When parents do finally admit that drug rehab for teens might be something to consider for their son or daughter, they are likely to be met with resistance or non-compliance. This can be due to any number of issues but again, the idea that one is too young for drug or alcohol treatment is likely to be a major factor. The idea that one has to quit alcohol before even being of the legal age to buy it is difficult to grasp. How will they ever have fun again? These are the issues that are best addressed by professionals. At SouthCoast Recovery in Dana Point, California, we offer 30, 60, 90 day and 6 month residential drug rehab for teens 18 and over. Our clinical therapist has 47 years experience in diagnosing underlying issues contributing to alcoholism and drug addiction, whether it’s related to mood disorders or childhood abuse or trauma. Our residential drug and alcohol treatment center offers gender-specific and co-ed homes for your teenagers as well as more individual clinical and holistic therapies than any other drug rehab center in Orange County. Individual sessions with our clinical therapist, an assigned drug and alcohol counselor, acupuncturist and massage therapist all help to stimulate healing from the inside out. While leaving treatment early can be a problem when teenagers go to drug rehab, at SouthCoast Recovery not only do most of our clients successfully complete 30 days but many stay longer to enter our transitional living program, which offers continued counseling, career guidance and life skills management as well as requiring college enrollment or employment. Studies show that the longer an individual can commit to drug rehab, the greater chance of long-term sobriety. Family support and participation in your teenager’s recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction is also incredibly important and can make all the difference in whether your teenager remains sober following initial treatment.

For more information on drug rehab for teens, contact SouthCoast Recovery today and speak with one of our intake coordinators about how we can help your teenager get the help needed for alcoholism or drug addiction. We offer residential drug and alcohol treatment in the scenic harbor town of Dana Point, California.
