With Drug Detoxification like this, You Don't Have to Suffer!
Initial withdrawal from drugs can be physically distressing, painful and even dangerous. Without appropriate care, withdrawal symptoms can include increased blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, severe muscle cramping and seizures.
Withdrawal symptoms depend upon the type of drug used, quantity and period of use. There are typically three drug classifications that elicit withdrawal symptoms. These include Benzodiazepines, Opiates and Stimulants.
Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines include prescription drug tranquilizers and sedatives that slow down the Central Nervous System (CNS) to produce a calming effect and are typically prescribed for treating anxiety, insomnia, seizures, acute alcohol or opiate withdrawal and muscle spasms. Drugs that fall into this category include Valium, Librium, Diazepam, Xanax, Klonopin.
Because benzodiazepines work on the CNS like alcohol, there is the possibility of seizure if use is abruptly ceased. For this reason, going “cold turkey” from benzodiazepines is a dangerous consideration. Medication should be discontinued as soon as possible via a slow and gradual dose reduction regime. Withdrawal symptoms may include severe anxiety, blurred vision, heart pounding, feelings of unreality, pins and needles, nausea, sweatiness, jitteriness, hallucinations, panic attacks and seizures. A drug detox is highly advised.
Opiates
Opiates are a class of a narcotic formed from the latex resin or “sap” released by cutting or scoring the seed pods of opium poppies. Opiates or opiod-based drugs include the street drug heroin as well as prescription drug narcotics such as Morphine, OxyContin, OxyCodone, Opana, Vicodin, Hydrocodone and Codeine. Opiates work by attaching to cell receptor sites and blocking pain signals, producing a calm, euphoric effect. As physical tolerance sets in, more and more is required to produce the same effect.
Cessation of opiates produces withdrawal symptoms in as little as six hours and includes hot and cold chills, diarrhea, nausea, muscle and bone pain, cramps, restlessness, yawning and insomnia. The severity of these symptoms depends upon the quantity taken. A drug detox is highly advised.
Stimulants
Stimulants act on the Central Nervous System by increasing heart rate and blood pressure, creating an intense rush, a burst of activity and decreased activity. Drugs classified as stimulants include cocaine, methamphetamines, crack, crystal meth and speed. Withdrawal symptoms associated with discontinuing stimulant use include fatigue, depression, mental confusion, cravings, restlessness, agitation and disturbance of sleep patterns. The most common form of detox for stimulants is rest and supervision.
Withdrawal doesn’t have to be painful
Most people are afraid to go through withdrawal and this keeps them engaged in taking drugs to ward off painful symptoms. Withdrawal can be painful, but it doesn’t have to be. There are typically three ways to detox from drugs:
Cold Turkey
With this method, you merely stop taking the drug and suffer the consequences. Withdrawal symptoms range from mild to severe depending on the type of drug taken, how much and for how long. If you are considering drug rehab, it’s likely your symptoms will tend towards severe. Going “cold turkey” with benzodiazepines could result in life-threatening seizures. Cold turkey is not recommended for benzodiazepines or opiates.
Drug Detox
The most traditional and safe form of withdrawal from drugs is a drug specific detox. Clients receive a mild form of prescription medication under medical supervision that reduces the risk of seizure and eases withdrawal symptoms. These medications generally include mild benzodiazepines or an anticonvulsant medication that is prescribed in tapering amounts until the body is physically stabilized and the threat of seizure removed. A drug detox should be the most comfortable form of detox available as it eases the body through the initial physical distress of withdrawal with minimal discomfort. SouthCoast Recovery offers a state-licensed safe detox with 24 hour care in the comfort of a home environment.
NeuroTransmiter Restoration Therapy (NTR)
NeuroTransmiter Restoration Therapy (NTR) is a revolutionary detox process that utilizes an all-natural amino acid and mineral solution to bathe the brain’s receptor sites, stimulating the body’s cells to shift into repair mode. This cutting-edge treatment program substantially reduces withdrawal symptoms and cravings while restoring mental clarity in days instead of weeks or months. SouthCoast Recovery is only one of three alcohol treatment centers in the United States to offer NTR , and the only treatment center on the West Coast. Individuals addicted to stimulants find the crash to be much less harsh with the application of NTR.
