Acupuncture and Drug Rehab

Acupuncture has served as a wellness modality in China for over 2,000 years. Although still considered “alternative” medicine by most in western cultures, acupuncture is quickly gaining notoriety for its effectiveness in treating alcoholism and drug addiction in drug rehab. the World Health Organization (WHO) now recognizes acupuncture as a viable alternative in treating a variety of ailments and disease. In a study conducted by Yale University, results showed that acupuncture increases the success rate of a drug rehab treatment program by 200%. Ear acupuncture, which assists in minimizing detox symptoms and increasing relaxation, is now offered worldwide in detox facilities and court-mandated in over 300 drug rehab centers because of its effectiveness.

SouthCoast Recovery is on the leading edge of a movement that considers holistic treatment as complimentary rather than alternative to traditional western medicine. We have an acupuncturist with a Masters in Oriental Medicine on staff who provides our clients with individual acupuncture treatment and ear acupuncture to relieve detox symptoms .

How Does Acupuncture Work?

The human body is an intricate web of electricity (energy) that has been proven to exist with the use of ultrasound. Meridians, which are energy channels in the body, can actually be measured in this manner. This web of electricity (also referred to as energy, Qi or Chi) should be in a constant state of uninterrupted flow, but oftentimes it gets blocked. Wherever the energy is blocked causes the blood to stagnate. This prevents oxygen-rich blood from providing nourishment to vital organs and tissues, resulting in a malfunction in the body that can result in a multitude of symptoms such as headaches, indigestion, insomnia, anxiety or depression. Acupuncture can access these meridians along 350 pressure points to stimulate Chi, which in turn stimulates energy and blood flow allowing for natural stimulation of the body’s own healing process.

Acupuncture may also help to prevent and treat illness by improving the overall functioning of the body’s blood, endocrine, organ, energy and immune systems. Herbal remedies may also be suggested as an accompaniment to enhance the overall benefits and long-term success of acupuncture. Herbal remedies that help calm the spirit also help regulate the neurotransmitters – the pleasure chemicals of the brain that affect mood. Regulation is a process of bringing the body back into balance.

Acupuncture in Treating Drug Addiction

Alcoholism and drug addiction is a three-part malady that affects an individual on the mind, body and spirit level. In treating drug addiction, acupuncture accesses the meridians or energy channels to stimulate the body's energy. Access points where the needles are placed along these meridians determine the effect on the individual receiving acupuncture for drug addiction. Ear acupuncture has been shown to produce a calming effect and reduce withdrawal symptoms. In a controlled study by a research team in Minneapolis utilized acupuncture detox techniques in a standard acupuncture drug addiction treatment group as opposed to a control group where the needles were placed just a few millimeters away from the indicated access points on the ear. The standard acupuncture group reported a 93% completion rate while the control group reported a 2.5% rate of completion, experienced twice as many drinking episodes and had to be admitted to detox more than twice as often during the six month follow-up.
