Dual Diagnoses Treatment-What Does It Mean?
- Dual Diagnoses
- Attention and Therapy
Dual Diagnoses (also referred to as Dual Diagnosis) is most commonly used in relation to describing someone with two co-occurring diagnoses at the same time, such as alcoholism coupled with post-traumatic stress disorder or prescription drug addiction coupled with bi-polar disorder. A person may be addicted to alcohol as a means to self-medicate symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a disorder that results from severe trauma or abuse. Both can be treated but require proper diagnosis in order for treatment to be effective.
Addictions of any sort always have a cause beyond the genetic predisposition and the addictive qualities of the drug or drugs being abused. Most often the causes of substance abuse and addiction are rooted in depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Addiction is best cured through efforts within the framework of specialized programs that include clinical therapy, education and group support. The root causes of addiction respond best to individual therapy and group support.
Doctor Bob, one of the two founders of AA, believed that more than 12-step work was required to fix addictions. He attended therapy for years after his involvement in the creation of the 12-steps and subsequent practice of the steps. In response, our guess is he was often working with people who struggled with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder or bi-polar disorders in addition to their alcoholism or addiction. Doctor Bob clearly felt that the 12-step program combined with therapy helped fight the root causes of addiction, and that this needed to be built into recovery programs in order to provide effective treatment for those suffering from Dual Diagnoses.
Dual Diagnoses Treatment Requires Special Therapy
The treatment of depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) coupled with addiction requires Dual Diagnoses treatment. Alcohol or drug abuse is but symptomatic of underlying issues that cause extreme emotional discomfort. People seek to relieve this discomfort by turning to alcohol and drugs for relief.
For example, someone who struggles with depression may use cocaine (stimulant) to relieve it. On a clinical level, depression is anger turned inward and is best treated by turning it back into anger and expressing it to fully release it. Anxiety involves going back to the source which quite often occurs in childhood involving something that was frightening. It later generalizes from fear of a particular event or object to anxiety – being afraid but not knowing why or what to be afraid of specifically. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a result of witnessing or experiencing a life-threatening event, such as rape, molestation, abuse or war. It is best treated by group therapy with other clients who suffer from similar symptoms.
Treatment for Dual Diagnoses without addiction
It is possible that people can suffer from dual diagnoses without addiction; for example, a person can be diagnosed with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), both of which need individual treatment to relieve the symptoms.
Thus, our Dual Diagnoses treatment center focuses on two specific psychiatric or mood disorders whether or not those problems involve addiction. They often do only because individuals don’t know how else to get relief or comfort, but not always. At SouthCoast Recovery, we give a clinical evaluation to determine whether underlying mood disorders exist in order to tailor an individual Dual Diagnoses treatment plan. Our clinical therapist has 44 years experience in the diagnosis and treatment of Dual Diagnoses. We can help you address and relieve mood disorders and introduce you to a life free of alcohol, drugs and emotional pain. Call today to find out more about our Dual Diagnoses treatment center.
