Alcohol and Binge-Drinking

Alcohol and Binge-drinking

Binge-drinking is categorized by the heavy consumption of alcohol in a short period of time, usually in a social setting such as at a party or event; although it can also refer to drinking heavily over a period of days in which normal responsibilities are neglected.

Who is at Risk for Binge-Drinking?

Binge-drinking has been associated with college and university students who rapidly consume alcohol for the sole purpose of getting “buzzed” or drunk. This may take the form of drinking games, beer funnels or shots and has also been associated with “hazing” – putting new fraternity members to the test by seeing how much they can drink before they vomit or pass out.

While many universities have tightened up policies on hazing and campus parties, binge-drinking remains prevalent among young adults. The most common danger of binge-drinking is alcohol poisoning. Someone who consumes more alcohol than the body can process in a short period of time is in danger of repressing involuntary reflexes, including breathing and the gag reflex. This can result in an individual passing out and/or choking on his or her own vomit. Signs of alcohol poisoning include vomiting, extreme confusion, pale skin, slowed breathing, convulsions and/or inability to be wakened. These signs indicate the need for immediate medical attention.

Binge-drinking also impairs judgment, which can lead people to take risks they normally wouldn’t. Drinking naturally lowers inhibitions and people under the influence tend to feel invincible. This can lead to drinking and driving. In a party or group setting it can also lead to increased chances of sexual assault, spontaneous sexual encounters and sexually transmitted diseases or unplanned pregnancies.

Binge-drinking is a sign of alcohol abuse and can be fatal. If you or a loved one drinks heavily and has experienced negative consequences as a result, don’t wait until it’s too late. Alcohol abuse is progressive and can result in serious consequences that plague you for the rest of your life, including expulsion, career derailment and court involvement.
