Role of Substance Abuse Treatment

Written on: January 21st, 2009 By:

The role of substance abuse treatment in the fight against drug addiction grows out of the nature of drug dependency itself. Drug addicts are the victims of a disease with both physical and psychological roots, and only those drug rehab programs which confront addiction in all its forms can hope to help patients achieve meaningful recovery. Addicts, contrary to popular conceptions, can’t simply choose to get better; they need competent addiction treatment from professional drug treatment centers. Anything less just isn’t good enough.

Here’s a lesson that too many substance abusers fail to learn: Substance abuse is not a choice. Those individuals who fall victim to chronic substance abuse don’t do so through any act of personal will, or individual volition; no one decides to be a substance abuser, and no one can ever simply decide to beat substance abuse. Before you can get better, you’ve got check yourself into a competent substance abuse treatment center.

It’s an obvious truth, isn’t it?: When you’re sick, you go to the doctor. If you’re suffering from high blood pressure, you seek hypertension treatment. If you’re suffering from substance, well…you seek substance abuse treatment. Substance abuse, like all diseases, can’t be cured without professional medical help. To beat drug dependency, you need to go drug rehab. Like it or not, that’s just the way substance abuse recovery works.

And remember: It really does work. As awful a problem as substance abuse is, substance abuse treatment poses a viable solution to it. The key, of course, lies in your ability to seek that solution out, and your willingness to commit yourself to the substance abuse recovery process. If you’re going to get better, you’ve got to admit that you’re sick, and that you can’t get healed on your own. Short of that, substance abuse treatment won’t and can’t ever work for you.
